"...There are, however, some designers and even clients who insist that the public deserve and will respond to much higher standards in graphics. They are convinced, as Charlie Chaplin was convinced, that the best way to entertain the public is to first entertain oneself."
Just got back from skiing and this trailer blew me away. Steep (movie) seems to show what extreme freeride skiing is all about. And no, no hip-cool-look-at-my-new-hairstyle snowboarders :P (snowboarding is a fashion these days, not a sport for the brave – it’ll cool down in time and remain among the true fans, just like surfing and other “cool” sports did).
I read about Camouflage on Metropotam (link in romanian). The thing that cought my attention was that they were compared to Depeche Mode (a logic linking, since Camouflage are the name in german synth-pop). First I thought “just some other copy-cats”. But luckily I searched them out, found out they’re quite old (singing since ‘84) and they had some well known singles (Love Is A Shield and The Great Commandment). So, they’ll be singing live in 19 january in Kristal Glam Club, Bucharest, if you can go, I think it’ll be worth it :)
Listen to one of the singles from their 2003 album, Sensor (their best, imo), called “Me And You”:
A great book about dutch typography and design, presenting Dutch Type from the dark ages to the present day. I got to browse it at the Atelier Tipografic event (in Bucharest, last month – organised by dutch and romanian design teachers). Mr. David Quay told me among other very interesting things that the book is half-sponsored by the Dutch gov (for them investing in education and thus in the future is something just as normal as getting taxes from the people).
It’s a great buy, for sure, but till then you can read it all for free here (Google Books). Take a look at its beautiful cover:
(photo from YouWorkForThem – a great store with some of the best books on design – they also have Dutch Type at almost half Amazon’s price)
This bridge is placed just outside my window. I got to visit it for the first time today. Interesting. Feels like “beam me up, Scotty” :P
and this is from the night they put it together (can’t believe it was 3 months ago already, time surely flies, with warp ten sometimes :P).
And if you’re wondering why the pictures are all at night, it’s because designers are actually vampires, we only work at night (it’s a big conspiracy to hide the truth from all of you people and all the other bla bla) :P
Later edit:
City Mall has posted on their site some details about the project (link in romanian). According to their webpage, I’ll have just around the corner 4 banks (Raiffeisen, BCR, Emporiki and Piraeus) and two big retailers, Domo and Billa (plus one casino, in case I feel lucky :P). I’d be glad about them, but having a 11-floors-24/7-open parking lot nearby means less fresh air from the parks around :(
At least I’ll be able to see Bucharest from sky high :)
